"What the hell do we think we're doing....?"
By David Wellbeloved & Julie Sincore
"This is crazy, isn't it..." "Well, yeah... but it's not BAD crazy..."
A year or so ago we decided to change our lives. It may have been from living a few dozen blocks north of the White House, but after September Eleventh, and an endless "Code Orange", and "Homeland Security" and the "Patriot Act", and those evacuations because a small plane or two flew the wrong way around the "no-fly-zone"... well I never felt relaxed in DC. I know it is by and large safe here, but the vibe didn't seem right for us and the housing market was just out of our reach, so home ownership was not an option. Plus, we were both ready for something new. A change was in order, but at that point all we were looking for was an adventure. Perhaps an extended vacation...
Every day, people say to themselves "I wish I was someplace else..." We asked each other "why not?"!
We are not rich, so the question became "how can we do this?" Here's the thing...if you first pay off debts even at a few hundred a month...after a short time you can bring down the principle enough to start saving. And if you have a few thousand bucks without debt you have a world of possibilities. We also have no children or pets to look after. The stage was set for a month or two in Europe. We started making plans, but the Euro was killing the Dollar and we'd still be coming home to our dusty, leaky, noisy, and pest filled apartment.
"What if we took an open-ended nice long relaxing road trip across the country and used it as a scouting mission to find our new home?"
There was no reason not to. The worst case is we would find ourselves back where we started but at least in new living quarters. Better still, we would find a place we both loved that met our needs and could inspire us to take the next step forward in our lives. We began our plan...
